The algorithm for objectifying indications for the surgical treatment of chronic adenoid hypertrophy in children
Abstract
Inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsil causes "adenoid symptoms" — impaired nasal breathing and/or sleep, snoring, cough caused by discharge flowing down the back wall of the pharynx, nasal speech, which reduce the quality of life of patients, and also cause the development of complications (especially from the middle ear). The article discusses an algorithm for objectifying indications for surgical treatment of adenoid hypertrophy in children, which includes a thorough collection of anamnesis and physical examination, objective parameters for assessing the functional impact of adenoid hypertrophy on the upper respiratory tract and a multidisciplinary assessment of the severity of the condition. The use of objective tests such as polysomnography, acoustic rhinometry and measurement of nasal inspiration can provide valuable information on the functional impact of adenoid hypertrophy on the upper respiratory tract and help make a decision on surgical intervention. Indications for adenoidectomy are not always clear, and there are no objective criteria for assessing the severity of the condition. The risks associated with surgery, including bleeding, infection, and complications from anesthesia, cannot be ruled out. Therefore, when deciding on surgery, it is important to be sure that the benefits outweigh any possible risks.
