Abstract

The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 can range from asymptomatic to severe or fatal cases.
Most patients recover completely, but a significant number of patients develop post-covid syndrome within a few weeks or even months after the disappearance of acute manifestations of infection, which is characterized by the presence of clinical symptoms from different organs and systems. One of the manifestations of COVID-19 and post-COVID syndrome is complaints from the gastrointestinal tract, which, according to the results of clinical studies, are registered in 10–60% of patients. The article presents current data on the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in patients of different ages who have had COVID-19. Potential mechanisms that may link COVID-19 to the development of irritable bowel syndrome have been identified. The growing amount of evidence of the role of the new coronavirus infection in the formation of gastrointestinal symptoms underscores the need for further research on the long-term effects of SARS-Co V-2 infection, not only in relation to respiratory pathology, but also in relation to the state of the gastrointestinal tract, including the occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome.
