Regional indicators of infant physical development in Saint Petersburg

Abstract

Introduction. According to the international concept of “The First 1,000 Days of a Child’s Life”, balanced nutrition and the harmonious development of infants shape the health of not only older children but also adults.The aimof the study was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of somatometric indicators of young children using WHO standards (Child Growth Standards, 2006).Materials and methods. In 2023–2025, 346 children (179 boys and 167 girls) aged 2–12 months who were breastfed were examined in St. Petersburg. Body length, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference were measured.The indicators were assessed according to WHO standards — “Child Growth Standards” (2006) with the calculation of the Z-score value for each indicator.Results.67% of children had average body length values, 23% were below average; 10% were above average and high. Age-appropriate body weight was recorded in 53% of children; 18% were below average; 29% were above average and high. Body weight corresponded to body length in 22% of children, 25% were underweight; and 53% were overweight.The distribution ofbodymassindex (BMI)values was similar: average values were found in 30%, below average — 23%, and above average — 47%. Assessment of nutritional status by the middle third of the upper arm circumference showed that 78% had normal nutrition, 2% had undernutrition, and 20% were overweight.Conclusion. The obtained data expand the database of somatometric indicators of the child population, which can be used to monitor the health of the younger generation in a metropolitan area.
