The reasons for the transition of children to artificial feeding during the first year of life

Abstract
Introduction. To preserve the health of the child, it is extremely important to maintain breastfeeding in the first year of life, especially in the first 6 months. In the Russian Federation, only 40% of women maintain natural breastfeeding until this period.The purpose of the study— to identify the main reasons for the transition to artificial feeding, in order to develop measures to prolong breastfeeding).Materials and methods. 60 women were interviewed, whose children switched to artificial feeding during the first year of life, according to the original questionnaire consisting of 36 questions.Results.From birth, only 55% of children were breastfed, 33.3% of children were breastfed from the 2nd to the 4th day of life, and 11.6% of children were breastfed by their mother. 97% of women refused to breastfeed in the first 6 months of a child’s life. The most common age of transition to artificial feeding is 1 month (28.3%) and 3 months (21.6%). Three main factors were identified among the reasons for switching to artificial feeding: hypogalactia (42%), physical and psychological discomfort (30%), and 18.3% unwillingness to breastfeed their child (initially, these women were set up for artificial feeding).Conclusions.Insufficient awareness of measures to combat hypogalactia, lack of assistance to women with physical and psychological problems during breastfeeding, and incorrect tactics during mixed feeding led to insufficient duration of breastfeeding in the study group. It is necessary to develop programs on prolongation and promotion of natural feeding even at the stage of pregnancy planning and during it, with the involvement of specialists of various profiles (including psychologists, social workers, breastfeeding consultants), and awareness of the entire population about the benefits, necessity and attractiveness of natural feeding.
