State of lipid metabolism and body mineral mass in children 12–13 years with constitutional-exogenous obesity
ORIGINAL PAPERS
Abstract
Introduction.Childhood obesity represents a medical and social problem, being one of the potential risk factors for decreased bone density and the development of osteoporosis in the future. The aim of the studyis to analyze the relationship between lipid metabolism components and bone mineralization in children with obesity.Materials and methods.A cross-sectional study, conducted on the basis of an outpatient appointment with a local pediatrician, included the analysis of data from 50 children aged 12–13 years with constitutional-exogenous obesity of the 1st–3rddegree. The study protocol included a retrospective analysis of medical histories, clinical examination, assessment of the lipid profile, and determination of bone mineral density using bioimpedance analysis.Results.The study involved children who had been suffering from obesity for at least three years. Their condition developed gradually, and they were all under the supervision of a pediatric endocrinologist.Blood analysis showed that 15 participants (30%) had dyslipidemia in the form of hypercholesterolemia and elevated low-density lipoproteins levels. IIn 5 children (10%), only elevated low-density lipoproteins was noted, and in 3 (6%) — elevated triglyceride levels. Importantly, no statistically significant differences were found in lipid profile parameters between groups with lipid metabolism disorders and those with normal values. To determine the relationship between mineral mass and lipid profile parameters, a multiple regression method was used. This analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation only withhigh-density lipoproteinslevels. Statistically significant inverse relationships were established betweenhigh-density lipoproteinslevels and body mineral mass, bone mineral mass, and the proportion of bone mineral mass. Simultaneously, a statistically significant direct relationship was found betweenhigh-density lipoproteinslevels and the proportion of body mineral mass.Conclusion.The complex mechanisms linking obesity, thehigh-density lipoproteinsfraction, and body mineral composition remain insufficiently studied and require further scientific investigation.
