Abstract

The first part of the lecture covers the terminology, classification, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical features, and diagnostic methods for urinary tract infection. This is one of the most common childhood illnesses, capable of causing both a short-term deterioration in health and irreversible kidney damage, including the development of nephrosclerosis. Despite the introduction of modern laboratory and instrumental diagnostic methods in recent decades, the problem remains relevant. This is evidenced by the increase in the number of patients with urinary tract infections worldwide by 65% or more over the past 30 years. This is largely due to late diagnosis and, consequently, delayed initiation of antibacterial therapy. This first part of the lecture examines the leading risk factors for urinary tract infection development, the clinical features in children of different age groups, and describes in detail methods for collecting urine in children and ways to detect leukocyturia and bacteriuria. Modern imaging diagnostic methods are also provided to help identify the causes of recurrent disease and treatment failure. The first part of the lecture concludes with a list of indications for hospitalization of children with urinary tract infections.
