Abstract

Introduction. Obesity is a chronic and multifactorial disease in which social stigmatization and psychological disorders can develop. The main method of managing this disease is adherence to diet and exercise recommendations. However, these methods are ineffective in the long run. The failure of lifestyle modification-based weight loss methods is usually attributed to the influence of children’s environment, causing obese patients to overeat. Patients find it difficult to maintain a normal body weight because they are surrounded by delicious, high-calorie foods. This, however, does not explain why some people can remain “in the doldrums” by persistently applying the weight control methods they have learned and thereby preventing weight regain. It is hypothesized that such children have specific cognitive processes at work that help them maintain adherence to lifestyle modification. The aim of the study is to examine cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a treatment modality for obesity in children and adolescents. Materials and methods. To analyze and write the article, we searched and analyzed scientific publications in Russian or English indexed in PubMed, eLIBRARY, Cyberleninka, etc. databases for the period from 2016 to 2023. Results and conclusions. By analyzing the results of studies by foreign authors, it was found that CBT is an innovative treatment method. It helps to maintain long-term weight loss.
