Abstract

The study of the physiological needs of the human body for nutrients in normal conditions and in various pathologies is an urgent issue of modern medicine. Zinc is one of the most important essential trace elements, which is involved in almost all processes occurring in the human body. The small intestine is the main site of absorption and excretion of this trace element, so damage to the intestinal mucosa can affect its homeostasis in the body. At the same time, zinc plays an important role in ensuring the normal functioning of the intestinal mucosa, exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Zinc deficiency is a fairly common condition in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases, but the study of the effectiveness of zinc-containing supplements in clinical trials is only at an early stage. Solving the problem of zinc deficiency in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases seems to be of great importance for managing the course of the disease. The prevalence of zinc deficiency is particularly high in pediatric patients, which underscores the importance of addressing nutritional deficiencies in this vulnerable age group.
